A Link Between Orange Juice and Exercise Recovery?

I came across an interesting study the other day that made me look at orange juice a little differently. This study looked at whether drinking 100% orange juice could actually help with recovery from exercise.
The researchers had one group of women complete a 3-month exercise program while drinking about 17 ounces of orange juice every day. Another group did the exact same workouts without the orange juice. By the end of the study, the orange juice group had lower blood lactate levels. Lactate is something your body naturally produces when you’re breaking down carbohydrates for energy during exercise.
Lower lactate levels don’t mean the orange juice “got rid of lactic acid.” Instead, it may suggest the body became more efficient at producing and using energy during exercise, including how it handles lactate. In other words, it may have adapted better to the stress of training.
Could the orange juice have played a role? Maybe.
Orange juice isn’t just sugar. It also provides carbohydrates to help replace energy used during workouts, potassium to support electrolyte balance, vitamin C, and natural plant compounds that may help the body manage exercise stress.
Does this mean everyone needs to start drinking orange juice after every workout? No. This is just one study, and it doesn’t prove orange juice is a magic recovery drink.
What it does remind us is that nutrition doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes foods we’ve been told to avoid can actually have benefits when they’re part of a well-balanced diet.
I’m always looking for research that challenges common beliefs and helps me become a better coach. This was one of those studies I thought was worth sharing.
